SOrTeD Rocket:
Agnikul Cosmos, a Chennai-based space startup
incubated at IIT-Madras, is poised to make history with the launch of India's
first private rocket, the Agnibaan Sub Orbital Technology Demonstrator
(SOrTeD), scheduled for March 22, 2023. The inaugural launch will take place
from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre
in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

It marks
India's first private launchpad deployment.

represents India's maiden semi-cryogenic engine-powered rocket launch.
It showcases
the world's pioneering single-piece 3D printed engine crafted domestically.
Rocket
Specifications:
The Agnibaan rocket stands at 18 meters tall with
a 1.3-meter diameter, capable of carrying a 100-kg payload to an altitude of
700 km. Fueled by liquid oxygen (LOX) stored in cryogenic conditions and
kerosene, the rocket boasts a 'thrust vector controlled, gimballed motor,'
facilitating directional thrust adjustments during flight.
Maiden
Flight Details:
The initial
flight will be sub-orbital, confined to Earth's atmosphere. Launching from Sriharikota's Satish Dhawan Space
Centre, the rocket will execute a fully guided vertical ascent, reaching a
peak altitude of 10 km before descending into the Bay of Bengal, approximately
30 km from its origin.
Engine
Design:
Agnikul's
craft consists of two stages: the 'Agnite' cluster engine in the first stage
and the 'Agnilet' engine in the second stage. Both engines employ
semi-cryogenic technology, utilizing refined kerosene and super-cooled liquid
oxygen. These engines, fabricated domestically, are single-piece, 3D printed
marvels, a global first.
Key
Features:
The customizable first stage can accommodate four to seven engines, adaptable to mission demands. The engines operate on battery-powered fuel pumps and electric motors, devoid of explosives, relying on pneumatic systems for stage separation.
