Rajya Sabha passed Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)Laws Amendment bill 2020

Key Points :

IIIT  Law Amendment bill 2020 has passed by the government in Rajya Sabha, New Delhi on September 22, 2020.

Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank introduced the bill in the Upper House on Monday. Parliament on Tuesday passed a bill to declare five newly established IIITs as institutions of national importance.

The five new IIITs are in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala, and Raichur under the Public-Private partnership.

Lok Sabha has already passed the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 on March 20, 2020.

There are totally 25 IIITs in the country. The central government runs 5 and 15 operate under public-private partnership (PPP) model. This Amendment bill act will bring the five new operational institute as a national importance institute.

They will also have the right to issue diploma, degree, PhD etc. under this act.

Highlights:

♦ IIIT Laws (Amendment) Bill encourages IIITs to create an innovative and qualitative method in IT in the country.

♦ This Bill will amend the principal acts of 2014 and  2017.

♦ The Bill will declare five IIITs in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode and granting them statutory status under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017

♦ This institution will be authorized to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology or Master of Technology or PhD degree like the one issued by a University or Institution of National Importance.

♦ This Bill will help the Institutes to make enough students to develop strong research in the field of Information Technology (IT) in India.
