First Extinction Alert from IWC

First Extinction Alert from IWC

The vaquita porpoise was the subject of the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) first-ever "extinction alert" on August 7, 2023, with only 10 remaining in Mexico's Gulf of California or Sea of Cortez. There were just about 10 vaquitas left in 2018 and they are only found in the northern Gulf of California in Mexico. There were roughly 570 of them in 1997.

With only 10 vaquita porpoises left in the Gulf of California, Mexico, their survival is hanging by a thread. The IWC's action has been necessitated by the grave circumstances that have brought the species to the verge of extinction due to its small population.

Exclusive Habitat: Gulf of California, Mexico

The northernmost region of Mexico's Gulf of California is home to the  unique species of porpoise, the vaquita. The species' survival depends on the preservation and restoration of its distinctive environment, which increases the urgency of conservation efforts.

Bycatch: A Serious Risk

Bycatchor the unintended capture of these marine creatures in fishing gear, is the main factor contributing to the rapid fall of the vaquita porpoise. Fishermen's tools like gillnets have been shown to be a deadly menace to the vaquita population.

Trade Complications in Totoaba

Inadvertently capturing vaquita porpoises occurs when gillnets are used to catch totoaba, a fish prized for its swimblades in Chinese cuisine. Gillnet fishing and its detrimental effects on the vaquita population have been addressed, but efforts to do so have been made more difficult by the unlawful international traffic in totoaba.

ComplianceA Glimmer of Hope

Despite the dire situation, the IWC's warning underscores that enforcing a total ban on gillnets within the vaquita's primary habitat could yet give this hardy species a shot at recovery. The IWC emphasizes how crucial it is to put in place practical safeguards to prevent further harm to the vaquita.

A Conservation Lesson

The Scientific Committee of the IWC highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to conservation activities. A thorough strategy that goes beyond current concerns is needed to address the larger reasons causing extinction.
