Saudi Arabia introduced the world's first 3D printed mosque print.
Saudi
Arabia introduced the world's first 3D printed mosque print.
Located in
the Al-Jevhara suburb of Jeddah, this mosque takes its name from the late
Abdulaziz Abdullah Sharbatly and was built by Saudi Arabian businesswoman
Wajnat Abdulwahed, inspired by her husband.
The 5,600
square meter church, established within the National Housing Corporation, was
opened with the participation of conservative politicians and leading
businessmen. Abdulwahed, a project manager at Fursan Real Estate, carried out
the construction using
state-of-the-art 3D printers from Guanli Company, a renowned pioneer in 3D
printing in Tuam, China.
Architectural creativity and design aesthetics:
Abdel Waheed
detailed the architectural splendor of the mosque, both interior and exterior,
in his interview with Arab News. The concept aims to create a peaceful
environment suitable for worship by emphasizing the principles of warmth and
hospitality. In the design, which has a circular layout and is easy to follow
the qibla, great importance was given to elements that reflect the
architectural heritage such as the volume of the space, lighting, design and
facades.
Iconic
Minaret and Outer Harem
The minaret
of the mosque was designed as an important part of the community. This Ismaili
Hijri-inspired open-air space near the Kaaba of the Grand Mosque serves as an
extension of worshipers during Friday prayers, Ramadan tarawih gatherings and
Eid celebrations. These unique features give Abdülaziz Abdullah Şarbatlı Mosque
a unique importance and are a first in the world.
Overcoming
Challenges and Things to Consider
Abdulwahed
talked about the main challenges faced when using 3D printing technology due to
its innovation, complexity and demand. Accomplishing this task requires a
completely new approach to traditional methods and should be carefully
considered during planning. While following the architectural truth of the
mosque, it follows the King Salman City Charter and incorporates the legacy of
Hejaz architectural heritage, it is concerned with the modern interpretation of
customary law.
Collaboration
and Looking to the Future
Completion
of the world's
first 3D printed mosque demonstrates collaboration between government
agencies, business leaders and technology developers. The use of 3D printing
has led to major changes in architecture and design, bringing efficiency and
sustainability to architectural practice.
