India Finalizes Defence
Contracts with HAL, L&T, and BrahMos:
On February 2nd, 2023, the Ministry
of Defence finalized five capital procurement agreements totaling ₹39,125
crore with domestic manufacturers to acquire critical systems for the Army,
Navy, and Air Force.
The contracts were formalized
during a ceremony attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Key private
entities securing contracts included Larsen and Toubro (L&T), alongside
state-owned enterprises such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and BrahMos
Aerospace.
Highlights of the Agreements:
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited:
HAL, headquartered in Bengaluru,
secured a procurement contract worth ₹22,800 crore for aero-engines for the
Indian Air Force's MiG-29 aircraft and related spares. This initiative supports
the MiG-29 upgrade program aimed at enhancing combat capabilities.
L&T:
L&T entered into two distinct
agreements valued at ₹8,380 crore for the supply of ship-based Close-in Weapon
Systems and High Power Radars to the Navy over the next decade. These advanced
systems bolster self-defense capabilities and enhance area surveillance at sea.
BrahMos Aerospace:
Under two contracts totaling
₹7,945 crore, the land and naval variants of the BrahMos supersonic cruise
missile system will be procured from the Indo-Russian joint venture, BrahMos
Aerospace. This includes all BrahMos variants, including the extended range
BrahMos ER, which was validated last year, thereby expanding conventional
deterrence capabilities.
Significance of the
Agreements:
The Defence
Minister emphasized how these agreements advance self-reliance in defence
manufacturing, aligning with the objectives of the 'Make in India' initiative.
In addition to supporting indigenous research and development and enhancing operational readiness, reducing reliance on imports conserves foreign exchange reserves. Currently, over 60% of equipment is locally sourced, compared to just 30% eight years ago.
Looking ahead, leveraging
indigenous capabilities could meet the export demands of friendly nations.
Overall, a robust domestic defence ecosystem promises greater strategic
autonomy.
As per the Ministry of Defence, these accords will additionally strengthen native capacities, conserve foreign reserves, and diminish reliance on overseas equipment producers in the times ahead.
