October 31, 2023: PM Modi opens the new section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor for faster freight transport.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the 77-kilometer New Bhandu-New Sanand section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) to the country, marking an important milestone. This development is expected to expedite the movement of goods from the region's ports and manufacturing centers. Passenger train movement has also accelerated as a result of sixty goods trains moving from passenger rail routes to the freight corridor.
Shorter Travel Distance
One of the noteworthy results of this project is that, according to a senior official from the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL), the travel time for the Ahmedabad-Delhi Rajdhani Express has been shortened by almost an hour.
Improved Communication
Ø Significantly improved connectivity with major ports in Gujarat, such as Pipavav, Porbandar, and Jamnagar, is made possible by the new section of the DFC. Transit times are shortened and Exim (export-import) traffic can move more quickly thanks to this enhanced linkage.
Ø In addition, the recently opened section has improved connectivity to important freight terminals like Jakhwada, Detroj, Linch, Viramgam, and freight loading centers in the Jamnagar region.
Ø To further support economic activity in the area, the new section offers quick access to the oil refinery in Jamnagar, the dairy industry in Anand, and the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
Highlights of the Infrastructure
Nineteen major bridges, 105 minor bridges, five rail flyovers, 81 road under-bridges (which eliminate level crossings), and six road over-bridges are all part of the 77-kilometer section. There are also 24 kilometers of rail lines connecting the two locations. This section's overall project cost is estimated to be around Rs 3,184 crore.
Bringing Heavy and Extended Trains Online
Operating heavy, long-haul trains with a 25-ton axle load on bridges and formations intended for a 32.5-ton axle load—a first for India—is one of the DFC's notable accomplishments. With the double-line electrified track, the DFC will be able to move more cargo faster.
Outstanding Average Velocity
Impressive average speeds have been reached by the DFC; the highest recorded speed was 99.82 km/h. India's transportation and logistics capabilities have advanced significantly as a result of this infrastructure development, which will ultimately boost efficiency and economic growth.
