International Mother Language Day:

International Mother Language Day:

Every year, International Mother Language Day endeavors to promote linguistic and cultural diversity alongside multilingualism.

This day holds significant historical roots, originating from a proclamation by the General Conference of UNESCO in November 1999. Bangladesh played a pivotal role in championing this initiative, and the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized it in a resolution passed in 2002.

The theme for International Mother Language Day 2024, "Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning," underscores the importance of multilingual education policies in fostering inclusive learning environments and preserving indigenous languages. The approach of starting education in a learner's mother tongue and gradually introducing other languages helps bridge the gap between home and school, thereby facilitating more effective learning outcomes.

Beyond its origins, the day serves as a platform to advocate for linguistic diversity and the preservation of mother languages worldwide. Various initiatives and events are organized globally to raise awareness about endangered languages, promote language revitalization efforts, and advocate for inclusive language policies. Additionally, with the rise of digital technology, there is a growing emphasis on developing digital resources and platforms to support minority and indigenous languages in the digital sphere. Overall, International Mother Language Day underscores the importance of linguistic diversity as a fundamental aspect of cultural heritage and human rights, fostering understanding and solidarity among diverse linguistic communities across the globe.

Ensuring the preservation of linguistic diversity is essential because languages profoundly impact identity, communication, social harmony, education, and progress.

Ensuring the preservation of linguistic diversity is essential because languages profoundly impact identity, communication, social harmony, education, and progress.. With globalization posing a threat to languages, many are at risk of gradual disappearance, leading to a loss of cultural diversity and heritage worldwide. Approximately 45% of the world's estimated 7,000 languages are endangered, with one language disappearing every two weeks, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual legacy.

Multifaceted and diverse communities flourish with their languages, acting as conduits for passing down and safeguarding traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way.

In conjunction with International Mother Language Day, an exhibition titled the Global Symphony of Languages is set to take place in New Delhi. Organized under the auspices of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), the exhibition revolves around the theme of “Akshar, Shabd, and Bhasha.” It serves as a tribute to India's linguistic diversity, exploring the richness of languages, scripts, and words that define the country's cultural heritage. Through 22 quotes in the 22 scheduled languages of India, the exhibition underscores the significance of mother languages and the urgency to safeguard endangered ones.
