Chhattisgarh Revives Aluminium Park Initiative:

The Chhattisgarh government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has decided to resume efforts to establish an aluminum manufacturing hub on more than 140 hectares of land in Korba district. The goal is to promote small-scale aluminum product industries, leveraging the presence of the state-owned major aluminum producer, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO).

The Chhattisgarh government previously made an agreement with Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (BALCO), a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited, to supply raw aluminum to small-scale industries at a subsidized rate.

Earlier proposals to create aluminum clusters aimed at boosting local downstream industries by providing subsidized raw aluminum from the BALCO smelter unit to MSME players were initiated in 2015 and 2021. However, they failed to progress beyond the initial land identification stage due to execution delays.

The renewed push for the project comes from the newly elected Korba legislator, Lakhanlal Dewangan, who has prioritized the project. Initial budget allocation for 2024-25 has been made to expedite the necessary processes and site development for the envisioned venture, which promises substantial investments.

Promoting the entire aluminum goods production value chain, including utensils, wires, foils, and automobile parts by smaller entrepreneurs within Korba, offers significant industrial growth, job creation, and revenue generation for Chhattisgarh.

Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (BALCO), established in 1965 as a central public sector unit (CPSU), operates the country’s largest aluminum smelter facility at Korba, producing 5.7 lakh tonnes annually. Leveraging BALCO's potential to supply aluminum at discounted prices to support smaller manufacturers remains a key attraction.

BALCO has achieved significant milestones, including the development of special aluminum alloys for the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile – Agni and Surface Missile – Prithvi. It was also the first in the Indian Aluminum Industry to produce alloy rods used in power transmission lines.

However, safety concerns arose in 2009 when a chimney under construction by Gannon Dunkerley & Company at the Balco smelter in Korba, Chhattisgarh, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 49 workers.Know More:
