AMUL's Golden Anniversary:

AMUL's Golden Anniversary:

In February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set forth a vision to elevate the Amul dairy cooperative to the pinnacle of the global dairy industry during a momentous celebration marking 50 years of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the entity responsible for marketing all Amul milk and dairy products.

Amul's Current Status:

Presently, Amul ranks as the 8th largest dairy company globally, boasting an annual domestic sales figure nearing Rs 80,000 crore. Its diverse portfolio includes milk, cheese, ice cream, chocolates, and other dairy products, exported to 57 countries worldwide. GCMMF possesses a milk processing capacity exceeding 35 million litres per day. However, European and New Zealand dairy giants dominate the global market due to early consolidation efforts.

Prime Minister's Call to Action:

Prime Minister Modi called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in propelling Amul to the forefront of the global dairy sector. The Managing Director of Amul affirmed full support for the ambitious vision, aiming for revenues exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore by 2025-26.

Amul's Journey:

Established on December 19, 1946, Amul emerged as a response to the exploitation faced by small dairy farmers by traders and agents. The GCMMF was formed in 1973 when six dairy cooperatives united under the leadership of Dr Verghese Kurien, the 'Milkman of India'. Amul, with its iconic brand name, was transferred to GCMMF by the Kaira Union in 1955. Over the years, Amul has expanded its reach, collecting milk from over 4 million farmers daily across 40 dairies and distributing it effectively nationwide.

India's Dairy Dominance:

India's dairy sector has witnessed remarkable growth, spearheaded by Amul's 'Operation Flood' or the White Revolution in 1970. Today, India stands as the world's largest milk producer, contributing 24 percent to global milk production. GCMMF, with 18 member unions and over 3.6 million farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat, has played a pivotal role in this achievement.

Key Global Players:

Key contenders in the worldwide dairy industry comprise Danone S.A. hailing from France, Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co. Ltd. representing China, and Fonterra Group Cooperative Limited originating from New Zealand.

Prime Minister Modi, during the celebration, assured sustained policy support from the government to advance Amul's global aspirations, emphasizing it as a national priority
