Northern Green Anaconda: New Snake Species

Northern Green Anaconda:  New Snake Species

In the remote reaches of the Amazon Forest, a team of scientists accompanied by a film crew has unveiled a previously unknown species of giant anaconda.

Guided by Professor Bryan Fry from The University of Queensland, the team meticulously examined and analyzed several specimens of the recently named northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima).

Discovery Site:

The newfound giant snake species was unearthed in the Bameno region of Baihuaeri Waorani Territory within the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Invited by the Waorani people, the team embarked on a 10-day expedition to explore the region and gather samples from a population of anacondas, rumored to be the largest known. Supported by indigenous hunters, the team delved into the forests, considering the snakes sacred to the local culture.

Characteristics of the New Species:

Among the encounters, the team encountered a female anaconda measuring an unprecedented 6.3 meters in length. Additionally, there were reports from the Waorani people of anacondas exceeding 7.5 meters in length and weighing approximately 500 kilograms.

Genetically distinct, the northern green anaconda diverged from its southern counterpart nearly 10 million years ago, showcasing a genetic variance of 5.5 percent.

The discovery of this anaconda species occurred during filming for an upcoming Disney+ series, "Pole to Pole," in collaboration with National Geographic.

Environmental Concerns in the Amazon:

The Amazon basin faces dire environmental challenges, including deforestation due to agricultural expansion, resulting in an estimated 20-31 percent loss of habitat. Predictions suggest that up to 40 percent of the forests may be affected by 2050.

Land fragmentation from industrial agriculture and pollution from oil extraction activities exacerbate habitat degradation. Forest fires, drought, and climate change pose additional threats.

Rare anacondas and other species in this remote ecosystem confront significant peril from these environmental pressures. Researchers are investigating the impact of petrochemicals from oil spills on the fertility and reproductive biology of these rare snakes and other key species in the Amazon.
