Hate Speech Events in India’ Report:

Hate Speech Events in India’ Report:

India Hate Lab, a research group based in the United States, unveiled alarming revelations in February 2024 regarding the escalating prevalence of hate speech, both online and offline, targeting Muslims in 2023. This surge underscores the volatile communal fault lines within Indian society.

The India Hate Lab, comprising interdisciplinary Indian diaspora
researchers, employs technology-assisted qualitative monitoring of regional
language public platforms, including speeches, media, and social networks, to
identify patterns of anti-minority hate.

With a primary objective of shedding light on provocative
content that stereotypes and dehumanizes marginalized religious groups, the lab
aims to promote accountability, policy change, and enhance campaigner
capacities.

The 2023 analysis by the India Hate Lab revealed over 650
instances of anti-Muslim hate speech. The report, titled ‘Hate Speech Events in India’, documented
668 such instances, averaging nearly 2 cases per day. Notably, there was a
steep 62% increase in hate speech incidents during the second half of the year,
rising to 413 following elections in key states. Moreover, 75% of these hate
speech events occurred in states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Key trends identified across incidents in 2023 included calls
for explicit economic and social boycotts of Muslims, dehumanizing stereotypes
likening them to termites and vermin, and the justification of past and
potential mob violence.

Notable events highlighted in the report included hate
assemblies organized by right-wing religious figures, communal sloganeering at
processions triggering violence in several states, and online trolling
amplifying Islamophobic
fake news during controversies such as that involving Nupur Sharma. Social
media platforms took action against a few accounts only after facing public
pressure.

The report also emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between hate speech and violence. Despite numerous police complaints, very few resulted in FIRs, leading activists to demand Supreme Court guidelines requiring investigating agencies to take action against hate speech perpetrators regardless of their political affiliations.
