Adani Group reveals New Domestic Facility for Ammunition
and Missile Production.
The Adani Group, a
prominent Indian conglomerate, unveiled the nation’s inaugural domestic
ammunition and missile production center through a collaboration with Israel’s Elbit Systems, aiming to meet the
armed forces' self-sufficiency requirements. The Defense Corridor Immunization
Manufacturing Complex of Adani Defense and Aerospace, sprawling across 500
acres, was inaugurated in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, by Army Chief General Manoj Pande
and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Key Points:
The Adani Elbit Advanced Systems, a 50:50 venture, includes
an army munition plant in Uttar Pradesh. It will provide 155mm artillery shells
and various other ammunitions to the Indian Army, which currently heavily
depends on imports. Initially, 32 ammunition variants have been slated for
production.
Diversifying into the precision-driven defense sector, which
is typically dominated by the state-owned Ordnance Factory Board and global
players, signifies a significant achievement for the Adani Group. This move
comes after the group's successful partnerships with major defense firms like
SAAB and Airbus.
The Adani Elbit plant integrates cutting-edge Industry 4.0
technologies such as the Internet of Things and robotics, promising enhanced
safety, resource optimization, real-time quality assurance, waste reduction,
and efficient supply chain management.
In addition to catering to domestic demands, the joint
venture eyes export opportunities to friendly nations. The goal of the Adani
Group is to create a formidable presence throughout the entire spectrum of
defense production, encompassing aerospace, land systems, weaponry, and
critical mission systems.
Given the substantial expenditure on imported ammunition and
missiles, which strains foreign exchange reserves and poses availability risks
during crises, bolstering domestic production capabilities is crucial to
achieving the policy objective of sourcing 25% of defense procurement locally.
The establishment of this advanced munitions facility underscores the ongoing policy drive and private sector enthusiasm to bolster self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning with broader 'Make in India' objectives.
