India Substitutes Maldives Military Personnel with Technical Teams:
India Substitutes Maldives
Military Personnel with Technical Teams:
On March 2nd, the Ministry of External Affairs in India
officially announced the arrival of the initial group of Indian technical
personnel in the Maldives. They are tasked with assuming operational
responsibilities previously held by certain military personnel stationed on the
island nation. This decision follows recent dialogues between the two
governments aimed at substituting soldiers with technical teams.
Background of Deployment:
India has upheld a modest
military presence in the Maldives for an extended period through mutual
cooperation agreements, mainly concentrating on aerial and coastal surveillance
utilizing helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft.
However, the opposition party at
the time, now led by newly elected President Ibrahim Muizzu, campaigned to
remove Indian troops, citing concerns about sovereignty violations, which led
to complexities in bilateral relations.
Resolution Outcome:
In order to address the dispute,
both nations reached a compromise, with New Delhi agreeing to replace fully
trained military units with civilian personnel possessing the technical
expertise to manage aviation assets effectively.
As the initial contingent
replaces a portion of the 88 Indian soldiers previously stationed to operate
helicopters and planes gifted by India, MEA
spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described this action as fulfilling
commitments to the Maldives. However, he refrained from specifying the exact
number of personnel involved in the initial deployment.
Skillsets of Technical Teams:
The replacement technical teams
consist of individuals proficient in light helicopter operations, maintenance
protocols, and other relevant aspects, drawn from India's Coast Guard and civil
aviation sectors. Apart from operating the platforms, they are also capable of
training local crew members gradually, aligning with the Maldives' strategic
goal of achieving self-reliance in aviation management.
Broader Defense Collaborations:
Strategic analysts emphasize that
beyond the immediate dispute, New Delhi remains dedicated to strengthening
comprehensive defense partnerships with the Maldives, with a focus on enhancing
stability in the broader Indian Ocean region.
