The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had recently released the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE-ZOO) report 2022, which was created based on the survey of zoos across India.

Key highlights:-

In India nearly 147 zoos were  recognized currently , which was categorized as large -17, medium -23, small - 33, mini-zoos - 60 and rescue centres -14.

The zoos were evaluated by the  committee of 15 independent experts based on six elements. They are : context, planning, input, process, output and outcomes. Using these elements the zoos has been evaluated.

Top level  performers of large zoo category:

1.Vandalur Zoo was rated “Very Good”  it scored 82 % in the MEE score.

It is the top performer in 3 of the 6 elements, including :-planning, input and output.

The next positions were  Karnataka’s Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens and Gujarat’s Sakkarbaug Zoological Park.

Top level performers of medium zoo category:

1. West Bengal’s Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park achieved the highest MEE score of 83 % and was rated “Very Good”.

2. The next positions were  Alipore Zoological Garden in West Bengal and Madras Crocodile Bank Trust/Centre for Herpetology.

Top level performers in context element:

Alipore Zoological Garden, National Zoological and Nawab and Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden.

Top level performer in planning element:

Vandalur Zoo scored 80% in this category.

Top level performers in Input element:

Vandalur Zoo, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and Mysore Zoo has scored 85%.

Top level  performers in Process element:

Kanpur Zoological Park and Mysore Zoo has scored 82%.

Top level  performers in Output element:

Vandalur Zoo and Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park has scored 85%.

Top level  performer in Outcome element:

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park has scored 85%.

The Arignar Anna Zoological Park, is named  as Vandalur Zoo, is a zoological garden situated in Vandalur, in the southwestern part of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was established in the year  1855 as the first public zoo in India.
