Supreme Court Bans Tiger Hunting in Core Area of Jim
Corbett National Park:
On March 6, 2024, the Supreme Court of India condemned the
Uttarakhand government for its involvement in deforestation and illegal
construction in Jim Corbett National Park. The Supreme Court banned hunting
in the main areas of the park, allowing it only in a certain area and without a
location.
Government is set to investigate poaching of tigers in
national parks: The Supreme Court has given permission to set up a
committee to examine the possibility of poaching of tigers in vacant areas
across the country or in areas bordering national parks. The committee will
also recommend ways to reduce environmental damage and seek compensation from
workers.
Legal Petition and Judicial Proceedings: The panel
led by Justice BR Gavai, Justice PK Mishra, and Justice Sandeep Mehta was
convened upon the appeal made by environmental advocate and legal practitioner
Gaurav Bansal. Bansal contested the
Uttarakhand government's plan to establish a tiger safari park and impose
penalties on animals found within the boundaries of the national park. The
court highlighted the negative impact of introducing hunting in key areas and
emphasized the implementation of wildlife protection measures.
Criticism and strong scrutiny: The Supreme Court
slammed former Uttarakhand Forest Minister Harak Singh Rawat and former Forest
Department Officer Kishan Chand for their involvement in illegal construction
and felling of trees in Corbett Tiger Reserve. . The judges said the authorities
disregarded the principle of public trust and cut down trees on a large scale
to help the business make a profit in order to stimulate the economy. The court
demanded a report on the crime committed in the shelter within three months and
warned that the Police Department would attack the place due to Rawat and
Chand, who played a role in the crime.
Previous stance on tiger safaris: In January 2024, the Supreme Court rejected the National Tiger Conservation Authority's (NTCA) proposal to establish tiger safaris in national parks, ruling out an "animal-centered approach" rather than an "animal-centered approach" He defended. To reduce commercial pressure on habitats, the "tourism-centered" approach to vacant and marginal areas has placed emphasis on the health and conservation of wildlife. National Park. The judge questioned the rationale for establishing a zoo in a wildlife area. Such environments can affect the movement of animals and cause the spread of diseases among animals.
