Writer
Amitav Ghosh wins the 2024 Erasmus Award
Indian
writer Amitav Ghosh has been selected as the 2024 Erasmus
Award winner by the prestigious Erasmus Award winner Dutch Praemium
Erasmianum Foundation. Ghosh was awarded for his outstanding contribution to
"imagining the undesirable" through a documentary focusing on the
climate crisis and humanity's relationship with nature.
Ghosh's
Impact on Climate Crisis Literature:
The Praemium
Erasmianum Foundation recognizes Ghosh's unique ability to address the complex
and unprecedented problems of global climate change through narratives in
history. Problems arose. Her work provides an illustrative context for
understanding the threat posed by climate change and invites readers to
understand the enormous impact of climate change through the power of fabric.
Born in
Calcutta in 1956, Ghosh has produced a wide range of works that include new
writings and sensibilities that transcend the boundaries of geography and the
body. His work is based on excellent archival research and explores themes of
migration, diaspora and cultural identity while maintaining a clear focus on
the human experience.
The Role
of Nature in Ghosh's Literary Universe
Nature is a
central theme in Ghosh's literary universe, especially his investigation of the
tidal landscapes of the Sundarbans in Hungry Tide. The performance is
particularly clear. Observing firsthand the ecological devastation caused by
climate change, Ghosh weaves a narrative that intertwines the history of the
Indian subcontinent with the ongoing power of natural disasters.
In his
evocative Ibis trilogy about poppy cultivation and colonial exploitation, Ghosh
reveals the wounds inflicted on the country by imperialism.
Non-Fiction:
'The Curse of the Nutmeg' and 'The Great Chaos'
Gosh's
non-fiction works such as 'The Curse of the Nutmeg' offer critiques of his
worldview. A sexist assessment, a worldview that reduces the world to a
commodity with no real value. Through pieces such as “The Great Chaos,” he
challenges readers to understand climate change in the broader context of
geopolitics and global economics.
By
encouraging understanding and reflection, Ghosh instills the optimism needed to
drive mainstream change. It proposes a new paradigm of human belief that
transcends traditional boundaries and emphasizes the interconnectedness of all
living things.
Honours
and Achievements
Ghosh's
outstanding work has been recognized with various awards, including the
prestigious Jnanpith Award 2018, India's highest literary award. He received a
special doctorate degree from Maastricht University in 2019 and was named one
of the most international intellectuals of our time by Foreign Policy magazine.
