Government takes action against 18 OTT platforms:

In a major move to combat inappropriate content on streaming platforms, the Indian government has banned 18 OTT platforms from hosting content deemed "obscenity, blasphemy and even pornography" despite repeated warnings. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has imposed restrictions on these platforms, including their respective websites, mobile applications and social media accounts, citing violations of Indian laws.

Banned OTT services include Dream Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Adda, Tri Flicks, X Prime, Neon X VIP, Besharams, Hunters, Rabbit, Xtramood, Nuefliks, MoodX, Mojflix, Hot shot VIP, Fugi, Chikooflix and Prime Play. Furthermore, the Ministry shut down 19 websites, 10 applications (7 on the Google Play Store and 3 on the Apple App Store), and 57 social media profiles associated with these services.

Abuse of freedom of expression

Revealing the measure, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said that it was a role play by OTT platforms to ensure that their content did not show creative ideas. obscenity, vulgarity and abuse. "Despite repeated warnings, these platforms did not comply with the government's instructions," Thakur said. The ministry's decision to ban 18 OTT platforms is legal. It works with other government agencies and experts specializing in the Information Act, Technology Act 2000, media, entertainment, women's rights and children's rights.

The government concluded that the content prima facie violated Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, which deals with the publication of obscene and sexual material in electronic form. Additionally, the content violated Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, which prohibits the sale, distribution and public display of obscene material. Additionally, depicting women in a restricted context breaches Section 4 of the Unfair Representation of Women (Restrictions) Act 1986.

Part of broader crackdown on OTT sector

The order on 18 OTT platforms is part of the government's broader efforts to regulate India's emerging markets. In February 2024, the I&B Ministry issued new guidelines to create a complaint resolution strategy for OTT platforms and digital broadcasters and appoint compliance officers to resolve user complaints.
