India to Ship Forged Train Wheels Overseas:
Minister
Ashwini Vaishnaw recently disclosed India's imminent transformation into a
significant exporter of forged train wheels, marking a departure from its role
as an importer for over six decades. Vaishnaw unveiled plans for a new facility
in Gummidipoondi near Chennai, poised to commence production of forged wheels
for Vande Bharat trains within the next 16-18 months.
Investment of Rs 650 Crore in Initial Phase:
The minister announced that the plant, a collaborative
endeavor, has attracted an initial investment of Rs 650 crore. Upon completion,
the facility, currently under construction, will boast an annual output
capacity of 2.5 lakh forged wheels.
Of this production, 80,000 wheels will be allocated
domestically to cater to the Indian Railways' Vande Bharat trains, while the
remaining 1.70 lakh wheels will be earmarked for export. This marks a
significant shift for India, which has historically relied on imports of
various forged wheel types from nations like the UK, Brazil, China, Japan,
Russia, and Ukraine for the past six to seven decades.
Russia-Ukraine Conflict Hinders Imports:
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has disrupted the supply
chain for forged wheels, resulting in import delays and supply constraints for
the Indian Railways. The establishment of a domestic manufacturing facility for
these crucial components aims to shield the railways from such external
disruptions, ensuring a consistent supply of wheels for its train fleet.
Vande Bharat trains, indigenous semi-high-speed trains, have
garnered acclaim for their comfort, speed, and amenities, emerging as a
flagship project of the Indian Railways in recent years. The government plans
to introduce more such trains on various routes nationwide.
ICF to Craft Standard Gauge Vande Bharat Trains for Export:
In addition to the forged wheels plant, Vaishnaw revealed
that the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai will develop standard gauge
Vande Bharat trains for export. With standard gauge tracks prevalent in most
countries globally, the railways aims to export Vande Bharat trains to other
nations in the foreseeable future.
This endeavor, a long-term initiative, acknowledges that
formal launch will require some time.
Advancement for Make in India and Self-Reliant India:
The establishment of the forged wheels plant and the
production of standard gauge Vande Bharat trains are lauded as significant
strides for the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat
(self-reliant India) initiatives. Domestic manufacturing of critical components
like forged wheels will diminish India's reliance on imports and preserve
valuable foreign exchange reserves.
Furthermore, exporting domestically developed trains like the Vande Bharat will showcase India's engineering and manufacturing prowess on the global platform, positioning the country as a key player in the international railways market.
